What is Mofusand?

If you’ve ever seen a cat dressed as a shark, shrimp, or even a strawberry while scrolling online, you’ve already come across Mofusand. But where does the name come from? It’s a combination of the Japanese word “mofu mofu” (which means soft and fluffy) and “sando,” short for sandwich. Put them together and you get “soft fluffy sandwich.” Adorable, right?

Back in 2017, Japanese artist Junko Noji - who goes by Juno, started drawing these cats just for fun. You’d spot them in silly hats, eating curry, or causing a little trouble. Soon, people began sharing them as digital stickers on apps like Line and WhatsApp, and before long, Mofusand had taken off.

Meet the Cats

Unlike most mascots, Mofusand isn’t just one single character. It’s a whole crew of cats of various breeds, none with official names or long backstories. They’re simply cute for cuteness’ sake. You’ll see them eating, playing, working, or getting into mischief usually dressed up in wild costumes.

They’ve worn everything from slices of bread to bee outfits, but nothing tops the shark suit. The internet went crazy over Shark Cat, whether it’s acting like tempura or just wandering around in that goofy outfit.

Collaborations and Collection

Mofusand has become incredibly popular in Japan. They’ve collaborated with big names like Sanrio, so you might catch them hanging out with Hello Kitty, Kuromi, or Cinnamoroll. They’ve even suited up in Monster Hunter armor. These cats really get around.
